The Nature of the Variable Galactic Center Source GCIRS 16SW Revisited: A Massive Eclipsing Binary

چکیده
We present a re-analysis of our Hand K-band photometry and light-curves for GCIRS 16SW, a regular periodic source near the Galactic center. These data include those presented by DePoy et al. (2004); we correct a sign error in their reduction, finding GCIRS 16SW to be an eclipsing binary with no color variations. We find the system to be an equal mass overcontact binary (both stars overfilling their Roche lobes) with a period P = 19.4513 days, an inclination angle i = 71, and zero eccentricity. This confirms and strengthens the findings of Martins et al. (2006) that GCIRS 16SW is an eclipsing binary composed of two ∼ 50M⊙ stars, implying that there has been recent star formation very close to the Galactic center. Finally, the calculated luminosity of each component is close to the Eddington luminosity, implying that the temperature of 24400 K given by Najarro et al. (1997) might be too high for these evolved stars. Subject headings: Galaxy: center — stars: individual (GCIRS 16SW) — stars: binaries: eclipsing

We report measurements of the light curve of the variable Galactic Center source IRS16SW. The light curve is not consistent with an eclipsing binary or any other obvious variable star. The source may be an example of a high mass variable predicted theoretically but not observed previously.
متن کاملOn the Chandra X-ray Sources in the Galactic Center
Recent deep Chandra surveys of the Galactic center region have revealed the existence of a faint, hard X-ray source population. While the nature of this population is unknown, it is likely that several types of stellar objects contribute. For sources involving binary systems, accreting white dwarfs and accreting neutron stars with main sequence companions have been proposed. Among the accreting...
متن کاملDiscovery of a 3.6-hr Eclipsing Luminous X-ray Binary in the Galaxy Ngc 4214
We report the discovery of an eclipsing X-ray binary with a 3.62-hr period within 24 of the center of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214. The orbital period places interesting constraints on the nature of the binary, and allows for a few very different interpretations. The most likely possibility is that the source lies within NGC 4214 and has an X-ray luminosity, Lx, of up to 7 × 10 ergs s. I...
متن کاملPeriod change and δ Scuti pulsations of eclipsing binary star RZ Cassiopiae
RZ Cas is an Algol-type partial eclipsing binary, the secondary component of which has filled its Roche lobe. Its visual magnitude is 6.18 and its period is 1.195 days. The most important characteristics of RZ Cas are period change (due to mass transfer) and anomalies in the primary minimum of its light curve (due to δ Scuti pulsations). In this paper, light curves of RZ Cas are obtained using ...
متن کاملA ug 2 00 7 A Study of Stellar Photometric Variability Within the Central 4 pc of the Galactic Center with Infrared Image Subtraction
We present a catalog of 110 variable stars within ∼ 1 of Sgr A* based on image subtraction of near-infrared (H and K) photometry. Our images were obtained over 133 nights from 2000 to 2002 in H-band and over 134 nights from 2001 to 2002 in Kband; the typical FWHM is 1.4. We match the catalog to other near-infrared, X-ray, and radio (i.e., maser) data, and we discuss some of the more interesting...
